I spent just over a year dabbling with stand-up comedy (through the second half of 2009 and into 2010). I had only performed one 5 minute open spot before the Edinburgh Fringe in 2009. Two years performing as part of the PBH Free Fringe were the highlight of my short-lived stand-up career, along with some excellent gigs in London.
Here's an excerpt from one of my first ever routines in one of my first ever gigs. Look at my tiny head compared to the microphone cover.
I'm not sure if I will return to stand-up comedy. I find the majority of stand-up to be predictable and uninteresting. TV has played a major part in the death of stand-up comedy as an art form. Bringing it into the mainstream and to a wider audience has limited the scope of what is possible and changed peoples expectations.
I might reconsider this stance in the future if there is a cull of both comedians and the ridiculous competition format.
